Jewelry Crafting: Mokume Gane

Let’s say you and your love have an important anniversary coming up. Let’s say too that it’s your five-year wedding anniversary. According to traditional anniversary gift guides, five years together is to be celebrated with wood. Wood. But before you go pulling a twig off your backyard tree (which is not going to win you any points, believe me), consider taking the road less traveled. Jewelry is always welcome, and Timeless Wedding Bands has something that fulfills the traditional wood gift with a modern jewelry twist. Mokume gane is a Japanese metal process that yields stunning pieces of metal work with the look of a natural wood grain.  Literally translated, mokume gane means “wood eye metal” or “wood grain metal.” This amazing and highly technical process originated with decorative sheathing and handles for samurai ...

Made For Each Other: His and Hers Wedding Bands

As a general rule, I don’t like things to be too matchy-matchy. I don’t like my earrings to match my necklace. I’d rather mix my patterns and textures. I even mix polka dots and stripes; what can I say? I’m a rebel. But there is one place I’ll make an exception: wedding rings. While my husband’s and my wedding bands are not a matched set, they speak to each other. We both have milgrained white gold rings. And although mine has a whole lot more diamonds, they sure do look pretty next to each other We’ve talked before about how a wedding ring, whether for a man or a woman, is an avenue of personal expression. But I feel compelled to tell you that sometimes, a little matching can go a long way. After all, you two are perfectly matched; why shouldn’t your bling be the same way? If you’re into the idea of ...

Keeping the Spark Alive: Caring For Your Jewelry

We all know that jewelry is a personal expression that says a lot about you and your style. You don’t want that message to be anything less than dazzling. Caring for your fine jewelry will not only extend its life well into the heirloom-passed-down-from-my-grandmother stage, but it will keep it looking new and fresh. Just like your marriage takes work to, well, work, so does your jewelry box. Waiting for something bad to happen to inspire you to start a maintenance regime is not the best plan. You wouldn’t do that for your marriage; why would you do that for the ring that represents it? Keeping your jewelry in impressive condition starts with prevention. I don’t wear my wedding rings when I clean with chemicals. Aside from the fact that it doesn’t fit well under cleaning gloves, the bigger issue at play here is that I don’t want my ...

It’s no secret that when it comes to wedding rings, women’s bands get the lion’s share of the discussion. But what about your man? His ring matters just as much as hers. Style Spotlight: Celtic Rings

During the colonial period through the 1800s, scores of people of Irish descent (from Ireland) emigrated to the United States, bringing with them a rich culture that can still be felt in present-day American culture. Many of these folks settled in Appalachia, which we can still hear in the fiddles and banjoes used in folk and country music. Another cultural import was the Celtic knot design. Celtic knots, which are also called Icovellavna, are well-known for their inclusion in Christian symbols, like crosses, along with monuments and manuscripts. In fact, the first known use of knots in the Celtic cultures’ style (broken and reconnected knots) was in a religious writing from the seventh century. Other cultures, going as far back as the third and fourth century Roman Empire, also used similar knotted designs, which were the predecessors to the Celtic knots that ...

Five Reasons to Give a Five Year Anniversary Ring

Don’t let the divorce myth scare you. You know the one: half of all marriages end in divorce. Total fallacy. Categorically untrue. But you know what is true? Every year of marriage deserves a celebration, especially the milestone years (one, five, ten, and so on). So when you hit the five-year anniversary, RING in the new year of marriage. Like what we did there? For our first anniversary, my husband and I celebrated. I frankly don’t remember what it was though, so I can tell you that it did not sparkle or shine. Sparkle and shine, those are things I would remember. Since then, with kiddos running around, jobs keeping us on our toes, and life bustling around us, we haven’t done much with regard to anniversaries. So this time, with our next milestone anniversary looming just 15 months, two weeks, and four days away (but who’s counting?), I ...

Set to Song: Music for a Timeless Wedding

A while back, I mentioned that I married a self-described music snob. My husband painstakingly selected almost every song played at our wedding. From the processional (when the bridal party enters), the recessional (the celebratory exit of the newly minted Mr. and Mrs. from the ceremony), the cocktail hour and dinner tunes, and the significant dances (our first dance, his dance with his mom, etc), he spent hours poring over his immense music collection. I would like to say that the only part he wasn’t exceedingly specific about was the dance music. I would like to say that he left that in the very capable hands of our DJ. But that would be a lie. He gave one very important instruction: NO Bob Seger. I’m not sure why, but he is not a fan of Seger. Most people love him, but not my man. The beautiful thing about your wedding music is that you have the ...
