Spring is Here: Spring/Summer 2018 Wedding Jewelry Trends

Ah spring. One of my favorite times of year. My peonies and hydrangea will be awakening from their winter slumber soon; the phlox and aster won’t be far behind. Every spring, my heart soars at the sight of my garden blooming and growing. And in 2018, I don’t have to look to just my garden for florals, florals, florals. Three-D floral embellishments are a big trend for brides tying the knot this spring and summer. In honor of spring bringing new beginnings, let’s take a few minutes to “spring” into the 2018 wedding jewelry trends.

Trend: 3D Florals

Application: Three-dimensional florals were literally ALL over the runways in the spring/summer bridal fashion shows. And with good reason; they’re beautiful. But they can be unforgiving and distracting in a gown. I preferred to have my ivory satin gown embellished with beading and embroidery. For the bride who, like me, likes a more streamlined gown silhouette but who also likes to be on-trend, try out some 3D floral jewelry. There are beautiful options out there. I have a pair of pearlized rosette stud earrings. Or you can call out the big guns and don a multi-finger ring and wear a veritable garden on your hand. If you would rather go with flowers in your hair, consider a headpiece that uses floral embellishments. Remember, jewelry doesn’t just apply to necklaces, earrings, and bracelets.

Trend: Black Trim

Application: So here’s the thing with black trim: it’s not really something that lends itself perfectly to jewelry, so we have to kind of embrace the idea of it rather than a literal interpretation. While I’m confident you could find jewelry with black piping or trim, I’m not convinced it would be the right look for a wedding ensemble. But instead, let’s focus on the black. Black has been often used in wedding color schemes; this is nothing new. But applying it in the spring and summer is definitely off the beaten path. For the bride who likes to shake things up, try pairing your wedding gown with a pair of black statement earrings. Or a black diamond cocktail ring. The pop of black will stand out, but it won’t lend too much darkness to your spring or summer wedding.

Trend: Bows

Application: Like black trim, bows run the risk of being a trend that is focused on gowns, but not necessarily the accessories used to complement them. However, bows have been often used to amp up the femininity of jewelry. Bows lend themselves particularly well to pairings with pearls, which are another trend that we’ll cover shortly. I also love to see jewel-encrusted bows as stud earrings or as the focal point of a choker necklace. One small word of caution when augmenting your look with bows: if not added to an outfit thoughtfully, bows can read to juvenile, for obvious reasons. To avoid your trendy bows coming across as too young, keep the scale in mind. The larger the bow, the younger the look (there are some notable exceptions though, but this is a good rule for general application). Also, I would recommend refraining from making the bows the focus of your wedding jewelry suite. A carefully tied bow on a bracelet or earrings is a far more sophisticated look than a whole suite of jewelry featuring bows on every piece.

Trend: Pearls, Pearls, and more Pearls

Application: The Jackie lover in me is jumping for joy at the resurgence in the popularity of pearls! Pearls have long been a symbol of femininity, grace, and sophistication. Jackie had all three in spades. One of her trademark looks was a three-stranded pearl necklace (which, fun fact, was actually made of imitation pearls…that’s right, they were fake). While pearls are back in a big way this year, they’re not back in the strictly Jackie way. In fact, the “in” look with pearls this year is many, many strands of pearls in varying lengths. And when I say many, I mean like eight to 10 strands. While this may not be desirable for every bride, the multi-strand pearl look can be scaled back while still achieving the trendy look. Take a page out of Jackie’s book and try a three-strand necklace, but update the look a little by choosing a necklace with different strand lengths (the three strands of Jackie’s signature necklace were closer in length, leaving essentially no gap between them). Bear in mind that when you wear such a large and bold necklace, more delicate earrings should be considered. Diamond studs or no earrings at all would be a smart choice. This will help you not look overwhelmed by your jewelry.

Until next time,
Rebecca
