A Buyer's Guide to Diamond Wedding Bands

On your search to find the perfect diamond wedding band, there are many details you will need to consider. What size diamond will fit you best, what style do you like, and how careful do you want to be to keep your ring clean are just a few of the questions you will ask yourself during this process. At Timeless Wedding Bands, we want your ring-choosing experience to be an enjoyable and memorable time for you and your partner. We want to help in every way we can to provide you with all of our ring-related knowledge to guide you to your perfect diamond wedding band.

In today’s post, we hope to equip you with all of the information you need to select your ideal Men's or Women's diamond wedding band that will display your eternal love forever.

What should I consider when comparing diamond wedding bands?

Many jewelers recommend using the 4 C’s: carat, clarity, cut, and color to help you choose your diamond ring. It is important to evaluate each of these characteristics in your search as your ideal ring will be influenced by these elements along with your personal tastes.

Carat

The carat of your ring (not to be confused with karat: a measure of gold) measures the diamond’s weight. Diamonds are weighed in metric carats which is defined as 200 milligrams. Carats have precise measurements that determine the weight up to the hundredth decimal place. The price of a diamond increases as the carat weight increases because larger diamonds are less common and often seen as more desirable. A smaller diamond doesn’t necessarily mean it has fewer carats either. Many times, the base of the diamond can be deep within the ring, and the top view of the ring may appear smaller than the carat weight would suggest.

Rings with more than one diamond are also very common. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can have different values and prices based on the other c components: clarity, cut, and color. For example, an eternity wedding ring or a simple diamond ring will likely have very different cuts and carats. While an eternity wedding ring like our Diamond Florence Rope Wedding Band showcases .46 carat diamonds surrounding the entire ring, a simple diamond ring like our Gemma Wedding Ring displays a set of seven princess cut .88 carat diamonds. These rings are a great examples of how the cut and style of a ring can alter the carat size. Even though the other c components will influence the carat of your diamond ring, the carat will also be determined by your budget and personal taste.

Clarity

Natural diamonds are made from carbon exposed to excessive heat and pressure under the earth’s surface. Diamonds develop characteristics from this process called inclusions and blemishes that determine the clarity of the diamond. Inclusions can be cracks, scratches, dark dots, or small white points seen on the inner part of the diamond. Inclusions do not affect the diamond’s performance or structure and are not visible to the naked eye. Blemishes are unpolished surfaces, indentations or breaks on the outside of the diamond and can reduce the diamond’s durability. The clarity grade is dictated by the visibility of these characteristics under ten times magnification. The classifications are, flawless (FL), internally flawless (IF),very very small inclusions (VVS1,VVS2), very small inclusions (VS1,VS2), small inclusions (SI1,SI2) and imperfect ( I1,I2,I3,). Flawless diamonds are the rarest and therefore, the most expensive.

An exquisite clarity is important on diamonds that are between the sizes 1.5mm and 3mm. Because these diamonds have a smaller diameter than the larger stones, they need strong clarity, or the whole diamond won’t have that outstanding shine that makes the ring glitter. Whether you like a strictly clean look, or you want your diamond to have a little personality, we can help you find the diamond band that will shimmer to your liking.

Cut

The cut is the most complex element of the 4 c’s to analyze. A diamond’s cut is often confused with a diamond’s shape. The cut of a diamond actually refers to the symmetry, proportioning, and polish of a diamond and the way it interacts with light. To grade a diamond’s cut, jewelers review aspects of the diamond such as brightness, fire, and scintillation. These include details on how white light is internally and externally reflected, how the scattering of white light displays the color of the rainbow, and the amount of sparkle a diamond produces. The cut grade of the diamond also considers the design, artistry, weight, thickness, arrangement, and quality of the diamond.

Along with these elements, it is also important to consider the aspects of appearance and durability. Rings that are less than 1.5mm wide will not be as durable as rings 2mm wide or more, but these rings may not look as delicate. No matter what your daily tasks entail, there is a flawlessly cut diamond in our selection that won’t interrupt your day-to-day work and will perfectly reflect your everlasting commitment.

Color

As contradicting as it may seem, a diamond’s color is based on the absence of color. The most common and most universal color scale grades a diamond’s color from D-Z, with D representing a colorless diamond and Z representing the most color. Many aren’t aware of a diamond’s color because the distinctions are extremely subtle; however, the color of your diamond can make a big difference in quality and price.

To determine a diamond’s color, jewelers compare the gems under controlled lighting and microscopic viewing conditions to a stone that is named the “masterstone.” The masterstones are precisely graded for jewelers to carefully grade other diamonds against them. Stones graded D-F are colorless, G-J are near colorless, K-M are faint, N-R are very light, and S-Z are light. Before purchasing your diamond, consider the hue, purity, and grade of color you prefer to represent your love.

How to decide on the style of ring you like

Many shoppers assume that the diamond ring look is just for women, but they should think again! Several men love the bold diamond look, but aren’t sure which style or design to pair it with. Luckily, we have plenty of options for designs in term of diamond bands. Rings like our Skylight Wedding Band are popular for men because they display a window of diamonds across or surrounding the ring as opposed to having the gems extend from the center. This style is beneficial for physical labor workers or workers who use their hands excessively on a daily basis. This kind of ring design allows men to show off magnificent gems without worry of bumping or bruising the stone!

Our wide variety of women’s diamond bands are sure to leave you breathless. We believe vintage wedding rings are gaining more popularity because of their unique designs as seen in our Suzette Wedding Ring. If you prefer a more classic look, rings like our Jocelyn Wedding Ring embrace the simplicity that gracefully showcases elegant and brilliant diamonds. Maybe you want to spice up your ring style--our Lace Vine Diamond Wedding Ring could be the perfect fit. This wedding band has an intricate flower design that beautifully accents its exquisite diamonds. Whether your style is delicate or deluxe, we can find your dream diamond wedding band in our unique collection.

How do I take care of my diamond wedding band?

As you contemplate purchasing a diamond ring, one thing to be sure to consider is how frequently you are willing to clean your diamond. To keep the sparkling shine, some may clean their ring once a week or once a month. How often you clean your diamond truly depends on your daily activities and the things your ring encounters each day. For example, if you are a chef who works with your hands and different foods, you might avoid purchasing a see-through ring or a ring with intricate details where things could easily get stuck. It is important to keep in mind how labor intensive it will be to clean your ring as it will affect your buying decision.
