6 Ways to Make Your Winter Wedding the Best Day Ever

When we think of weddings, we often envision spring flowers, summer temperatures, and sunset scenes. Bouquets of roses, tulips, and lilies accompanied by bright colored dresses are both popular and traditional. While we love spring and summer weddings, there is something so unique and beautiful about having a wedding in the colder months of the year.

Winter may not be the first season that comes to mind when planning a wedding. However, winter weddings illuminate a sense of elegance, grace, and sophistication that truly cannot be conveyed in spring or summer weddings. There are layers of details that you can include to make your winter wedding the best day ever.

Worried it may be too cold? Don’t be! There are many things you can do to warm up your special day, both inside and out. If you love the winter months and smile at the thought of a cozy, snowcapped wedding, these ideas may be just what you’re looking for!

Sleigh (and Wedding!) Bells Ring: Winter Wedding Ideas

1. Winter color schemes to complement your elegant theme

Traditional winter weddings use many shades of reds and greens. However, the new trend is to focus on the most natural color of winter -- white! Our favorite pairings include white with crystal accents (think chandeliers, pendants, and centerpieces,) white with navy, or white with silver. These combinations symbolize purity and grace. Still dreaming of a red and white wedding? Consider using a nontraditional shade, such as cranberry or an antique ruby.

Don’t get so consumed with picking your color scheme that you forget about the textures you are going to use. One of the best parts of winter weddings is that you can use a wide variety of textures and can even indulge in using layers!

Decorate with soft textures such as velvet, tweed, and chenille. And let’s be honest, a faux fur shawl is a luxurious touch that only winter brides can indulge in! These textures will provoke coziness in the midst of the chilly weather.

Want to make sure your guests are comfortable despite the frigid temperatures? Consider providing shawls or hand muffs at the ceremony or reception to keep them warm. Also, make sure you have a coat check system in place so that guests can find their belongings with ease at the end of the celebration!

  1. Bridal gowns that will make you feel like an ultimate snow princess

While long sleeve wedding dresses have a unique appeal, don’t feel like you HAVE to get a dress with sleeves because of the temperature! Choose whichever dress you would like! For this winter, we have been seeing a lot of off the shoulder gowns and dresses made of textured fabrics such as lace or tulle.

While you don’t need a warm dress, it would be wise to have matching shawls and tights for you and your bridesmaids. We’ve also seen adorable brides rocking sweaters over their wedding dresses in white, blush, or whatever color matches their theme! These details can add an extra touch of flair to your wedding day.

Still worried you might be cold? Don’t forget that you are most likely going to be getting married inside! And once you and your new husband hit the dance floor, you probably won’t be feeling chilly!

  1. Sparkling white gold diamond wedding bands

White gold diamond wedding bands are a wonderful choice for anyone getting married in the winter months. These rings exemplify purity and will serve as a beautiful reminder of your loyal and loving partner.

In addition to white gold being the preferred ring metal for winter brides, diamond wedding bands that sparkle and glisten like freshly fallen snow are highly sought after. Some of our favorite winter-inspired wedding bands include the Luciana Wedding Ring, the Diamond Lace Wedding Ring, and the Gabrielle Wedding Ring.

Your wedding band is the one element of your wedding day that will be with you every day for the rest of your life! Be sure to get a ring that you adore!

  1. Flowers and centerpieces that will help you feel “marry and bright”

Fresh flowers that complement your theme are often a must-have for brides. Recently, there have been a few new trends regarding floral decorations. Just as the color schemes of winter weddings are changing, so are the flower choices.

In the past, winter weddings have been accented with bright red roses and lilies. Now white hydrangeas and white roses are becoming the flowers of choice. Similarly, many winter brides are using wreaths rather than bouquets when they walk down the aisle.

Remember, centerpieces do not have to be made of flowers. Consider using decorations with elements of nature, such as ice sculptures, wooden branches decorated with crystals or sparkly pine cones. Using more subtle colors rather than bright reds and greens in your decorations will help provoke feelings of serenity and new beginnings.

  1. Drinks that will make your guests feel warm and cozy

There are many creative ways you can make your cocktail hour one to remember. For starters, you could have a coffee and hot chocolate bar that includes sprinkles, chocolate shavings, and whipped cream when your guests first arrive at the reception. This is an option both children and adults will love!

To make the evening even more festive, feature a full cocktail/beverage menu that includes holiday-inspired drinks such as cranberry martinis, spiced cider, and eggnog. To add to the winter wonder, serve cocktails in glasses rimmed with crystals and sugar to symbolize the effect of snow.

Want to offer a few treats to go along with your cocktails? Instead of going with the traditional chocolate fountain, do something a bit more original. Offer s’mores, chocolate covered chestnuts, or shortbread cookies at the bar to complement your them.

  1. Honeymoon to a chilly destination

Why not go on a honeymoon that coincides with your wedding theme? Don’t let the winter celebration stop at your reception! Instead of going on the standard tropical getaway, go somewhere where you can explore the wonders of the winter months.

One idea is to do something that sparks your inner adventurer like skiing, ice skating, or snowshoeing. After spending the day outside, you and your new husband can cozy up in a cabin with hot chocolate and a warm fire. In many ways, this type of honeymoon is even more romantic than going to the beach!

There are a lot of options for winter getaways in the United States including northern Michigan, Montana, Colorado, and upstate New York. Looking to go abroad? Head to Canada, Sweden, Norway, or Finland!

Your wedding day is one you will remember for the rest of your life. If you are considering a winter wedding, we hope these tips helped inspire you!
